“This test measures 5‑Hydroxyindoleacetic Acid (5‑HIAA), a substance produced when the body breaks down serotonin. High levels can indicate a type of rare tumour called a carcinoid tumour. It’s usually performed on urine but sometimes blood. The test can help detect or monitor these tumours and check how well treatment is working. Results are interpreted alongside symptoms and other tests to give a clearer picture.
Important: Patients are advised to avoid eating, drinking, or taking the following while you are collecting the sample and for two days before you start collection: Alcohol, avocados, bananas, kiwi fruit, pineapples, red plums, tomatoes, walnuts, and cough medicine.”
